Whether you lead a big organisation, run a medium-size team or are a sole trader in the gig economy, you need a plan for your business. Here are the questions to ask yourself to get started…

1. What are we up for?

You understand the purpose of your business and the work you do, but what exactly is your ambition? Think about how far you can go, and how to measure and track that so you know you're getting there.

2. Are we taking part?

Are you clear about which markets are open and accessible to your business, and whether you should participate in them? Work out where to target your efforts, not just what to do and how far to go. Make a map of where you will and won't play, whether that's local, regional, national or international.

3. What's our USP?

What marks you out in a way that will beat the competition? What's the unique selling point that makes your product or service different from anyone else's? Be clear about what it is, and ensure that you highlight it in marketing or sales initiatives.

4. Are we capable?

What skills do you and your team need to be able to deliver this USP in these markets? If you don't have them already, identify where and how you can develop them.

5. Have we got the scaffolding?

What other structures and processes do you need in place to build and maintain the skills you have gained, and operate effectively in your chosen markets? Think about technology, brand, space, supply and distribution lines.
