Pillow marks and yellow stained nails are the two things that can strike fear in the heart of any nail polish addict.

But, while we still haven't found a cure for stopping the dreaded late night nail smudge, we might just be able to help you with your unintentional Simpsons manicure.

Talonted Lex is a beauty blogger, who also happens to be a dab hand at nail art.

With a nail polish collection bigger than our actual wardrobe, we expected Lex to have the kind of nails Dot Cotton would be proud of (no offence Lex).

So, when she uploaded this picture of her natural nails, we couldn't believe how white they were...

So where are we going wrong? Why do we have the kind of yellow nails that make us look like Homer's love child?

Well, it turns out that Lex has a secret weapon in her nail kit and it's one that the rest of us would normally keep next to our bathroom sink...

In her blog post 'Nail Care Tips and Tricks for Growing Your Nails', Lex revealed her trick for removing yellow stains from nails and it's quite honestly blown my mind.

'If you have some staining there is a very easy remedy: coat your bare nails in whitening toothpaste, leave for 10 minutes and scrub off with a nail brush. Et voila! Perfect nails once again.'

We spoke to Adam Slee, Nail Ambassador for Rimmel London to get his say on this toothy hack.

'I've heard of whitening toothpaste being used on the underneath of the free nail but I would always opt for a natural remedy such as lemon juice to remove stains first, due to the chemical agents in whitening toothpaste. You can also try a white nail pencil to give the illusion of whiter tips, like the Rimmel London White Nail Pencil.'

Next time you see us we'll have nails brighter than Rylan's teeth.
