11 Makeup Artists’ Favorite Drugstore Products

While we’re on set shooting closets, fun videos like this, and some of our favorite celebrities, we try to act sponge-like as much as possible. Meaning we hope to absorb and go home with as many tips, tricks, and pieces of sage advice as possible from the hairstylists, makeup artists, stylists, and subjects themselves. And since you know we’re a nosy bunch, we’ll just tell you that most of the time, we’re still there after call time, raiding the makeup artist’s kit, peppering them with questions like “What’s your favorite eyeliner that will stay put for 15 hours? or “How do you apply foundation to super-dry skin?” or “What’s the one drugstore product you always stock up on?” And so, just for you (because we love you), we got 11 pro makeup artists to tell us about that holy-grail item and why they can’t be without it.

“I love a good drugstore product, but what I definitely couldn’t live without and use every day at work are Ardell false lashes. From individuals to whispie strips—they are a staple in my kit.”

“You can’t go wrong with Burts Bees lip products; the tinted balms are a staple, and the full-color lipsticks are incredible. My favorite is the Lip Crayon in Sedona Sands, it’s a seriously beautiful dusty pale rose that feels amazing on the lips, has a natural matte texture, and stays put!”

Weleda Skinfood—use it as a facial mask, to repair, to highlight... It’s one of those all-purpose items that’s a staple in my kit.”

Bioderma Hydrabio H2O because it’s a multi-product for the most sensitive skin, meaning it’s compatible for all my clients. I use it as makeup/eye makeup remover; it takes off all waterproof makeup and is an excellent all-over cleansing water when prepping the skin.”

“I love the Hada-Labo Ultimate Anti-Aging Facial Mask. These are so affordable and amazing! They come four to a box and are like a giant glass of water for your face. I use them to prep skin before big red-carpet events and also love them after traveling. You leave them on for about 15 minutes and honestly see results right away—genius!”

“I love the Bioré Self-Heating One Minute Mask. It’s a great, quick way to refresh, clean, and rid pores of dirt and oil when I don’t have time to commit to a full facial.”

“I continue to pop into any drugstore for Ardell lashes, both the strips and individuals. I love that you can find them anywhere, and they have a look for everyone.”

“I love a lot of drugstore products, there are great products in every line, but I love the Maybelline New York Volume Mascara; the brush is a great shape to lengthen and add volume.”

Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara has been a staple of mine for years; it gives amazing results, you can really build up the lashes, and it never flakes or dries out. I get the most lush lashes with this mascara, and it’s great because mascara is the one thing I have to replace most in my kit.”

Rimmel Professional Eyes Black Liquid Eyeliner has a thin brush that doesn’t separate and gives a good, dense color.”

“The UK brand Barry M is, in my opinion, the best all-around drugstore brand out there. If I had to pick just one product, which is almost impossible, it would be the Chisel Cheeks Contour Kit. It’s a great set of perfect shades that aren’t too warm or strong and creates a believable sculpt.”
